Can You Do Sustainability?
As companies literally rush to make themselves at least appear Earth-friendly, the word sustainability is front and
center. Yet, it seems to mean something different to almost everyone. Many consumers associate it with nutrition
and safety almost as much as eco-green. Based on closely tracking this issue and related research, Demeter
concludes that sustainability literally broadens the appeal of many beliefs promoted by non-government
organizations (NGO's) that were previously considered extreme.
A 2007 nationwide survey by the Leopold Center found that 69% of respondents "somewhat" or "strongly" agree that local food is better for their personal health; 57% similarly agreed that organic food was healthier than conventional. Slightly less than half of respondents "somewhat" or "strongly" agreed that conventional food grown locally was better for their health than organic food brought in from across the country. This response is surprising, considering that many people who purchase organic food do so because of perceived health benefits. Consumers are now as hungry for information about how their food was raised as they are for the food itself. What does this mean for agriculture and food? We strongly urge companies to take this very, very seriously. Demeter Communications knows both agriculture and consumers. Let us help you make sustainability a positive for your company and consumers. For more information, contact . |
